There are two types of magic points: a player's personal magic points and a structure's magic points
Player's magic points:
Every player has a personal pool of magic points that generally increases by one every turn. These points are required to construct new magic structures, along with a gold cost. These points can ALSO be used to cast a spell, though that is wasteful and should only be done in a desperate situation.
Structure's magic points:
Every magic structure controlled by a player has its own pool of magic points which also increases by one every turn. The only way to use these magic points is by casting a spell. When a spell is cast from a particular magic school, the magic structure which enables the school will drain magic points from its pool. If you cast a spell but don't have enough points in your structure's pool, additional points may be drained from your personal player pool to make up the difference. It is good practice to avoid this.
You can cast as many spells per turn as you have magic points for, so it is a good idea to build as many magic structures as you can. However, you can have only one magic structure of each type. So, you can't build a pile of Academies in order to rain fireballs down every turn.
You can capture magic structures from other players by conquering an area that has a magic structure in it. If you already have a magic structure of the same type as one that you would capture, the captured structure is destroyed instead.
